Why Bridesmaids Wear Same Dress
Wedding is a generally acceptable event: it's not peculiar to any society or culture. People get married daily but the nature or the extent to which the event is celebrated is what differs. Some are flamboyant and some are modest with it. I believe each family's decision on the extent of the ceremony is based on a lot of things ranging from financial status, religious beliefs, culture or family decision.
One thing that's constant is the bridal train, also known as bridesmaids, a situation whereby the company of friends that follow the bride wear the same dress on her special day. The quality, style and how colourful the dresses are might solidly depend on the category of people in the 'train.'
However, this has not always been like this, wedding event didn't start with bridal train bridesmaids group of friends that we see these days. The kind of cloth may be suit, jacket other office like materials. But what's common most is the uniformity of the dress and the wedding gown-like kind of dress.
When we beamed our search light in the direction of the origin of this wedding dress style, this mode of dressing for bridesmaids may have it's origin from negative belief of the people of the then.
The Ancient Roman started this idea of a bridal party and at that time the bridesmaids would not only dress like each other, they would in essence, don what the bride was donning.
As a result, the altar would then be covered by near indistinguishable ladies; no one would or was meant to be able to tell the ladies apart, because surprise; they were meant to be decoys.
The bridesmaids were intended as decoys because weddings of those times had a lot more worries, that honestly make some of the stuff we worry about these days quite pale in comparison. Any glad tidings at the time had the potential of attracting evil spirits, according to their belief and there was also the added factor of all the suitors whom the bride may have rejected prior to the wedding.
For this reason, the bridal couple needed to be kept safe from demons and angry, rejected men, so they dressed their friends in matching wedding attire.
They hoped that the coordinated dressing which basically made all of them look alike would confuse the evil forces and angry men long enough for the couple to get out their vows. By the close of the Victorian era, these threats had greatly reduced and so the brides felt more comfortable to relax this protocol and begin to dress more flamboyantly than the bridal parties and then of course, along came the tradition of donning white dresses later on.
The culture might have left the original reason far behind, the uniform for bridesmaids has stuck around and modern reasons may simply be; an acceptance of bridesmaids wearing the same dress as a well-heeled tradition or even just because it makes for really awesome wedding pictures.
So when next you attend a wedding ceremony and you see bridesmaids in the same dress, you should remember the uncivil believe behind the reason for the dress and the origination of the bridal maids that's gone world wide. Not to worry, that doesn't matter again.
